I picked this book to read because the author, Gail Anderson-Dargatz, was born in Salmon Arm, where I was raised , and the novel is set near Salmon Arm during the big forest fire. I enjoyed it much more than I had expected. the story begins when Kat and her husband and child return to the valley to help her aging parents get ready to escape a raging forest fire that burns closer and closer. As Kat shifts through a houseful of keepsakes and memories she finds ghosts, family secrets, and uncovers long-buried feelings for a former lover. This is a story of a disallusioned woman trying to get through life saddled with an emotionally-needy shell of a man juxtaposed with the unfolding story of her long-deceased, oppressed grandmother with whom Kat shares marked physical and emotional characteristics. Turtle Valley keeps your interest throughout.
